You may be entering this course very excited about the course content; that’s terrific! I have always been a “structure and function” oriented person, and I can relate to your feelings. I think you will really enjoy our class.
On the other hand, you might be entering this class with some sense of trepidation. Maybe you didn’t enjoy your A&P coursework in undergrad? Perhaps you struggled to see how the system works together or imagine the structures in 3-D? Maybe you found the content dry or (gasp) boring? I’ve got you covered too! As much as I would love to guarantee you will leave the class a mega-fan, I can’t. That said, I do know that even my most initially reluctant students tend to see the content in a new light when it is contextualized within patient populations.
Speech and swallowing are motor acts occurring within the context of complex physiological systems. As such, it is essential we have a deep understanding of the upper aerodigestive tract.
This course is designed to introduce you – as future SLPs – to functional, applied anatomy and physiology of the speech and swallowing mechanism and related systems, major concepts within motor control & motor learning across the human lifespan, and the practical clinical applications of these concepts.
